Between China and Viêt Nam

Lingling YU and Trang MINH NGUYEN

As part of the exhibition Art of Ðông Sơn, Southeast Asia, the Barbier Mueller Museum and the Ateliers d'ethnomusicologie (ADEM) invite two brilliant musicians. They invite us on a journey between China and Vietnam, a dialogue on the border of rich traditions.

Lingling YU was born in Hangzhou, in the south-east of China. She embraced music at the age of eight, studying the violin, the Chinese fiddle, the erhu and the pipa lute, and gave concerts at a very young age. At the age of thirteen, she finally chose to devote herself to the pipa.

Her interpretation, supported by an exceptional mastery of all the techniques of her instrument, is powerful, precise, warm and creative, characterised by great clarity and a rare finesse of play. For her, this is the guarantee of a harmonious encounter between the strength of the emotions and an inner state of serenity, bringing together the two fundamental elements of Chinese philosophy: Yin and Yang.

Lingling is currently a professor at the HEM in Geneva.

Trang MINH NGUYEN is a virtuoso specialist of the dân tranh (Vietnam) and guzheng (China) zithers, first prize in 2008 at the National Contest in solo and ensemble of traditional music instruments (Vietnam). From 2003 to 2016, she was a member of the Tre việt band, a professional musical ensemble playing traditional instruments built from the materials (bamboo and stone) of the central highlands of Vietnam - one of the cultural cradles of the country, more widely of Indochina.
